I’m Xinlin Wu, a freelance illustrator based in Wuhan, China. I hold an MA in Illustration from Kingston University and have over ten years of experience in visual design and brand communication. This background has given me a strong understanding of concept development, visual storytelling and the practical requirements of commercial projects.
My practice combines editorial storytelling with surreal and emotionally resonant imagery. Drawing from a female perspective, I explore women’s inner worlds, self-companionship, identity, memory, nature and contemporary life. Through symbolic objects, East Asian female figures, detailed environments and dreamlike transformations, I translate complex emotions and abstract ideas into clear visual narratives.
Alongside commissioned work, I develop personal illustration series centred on the experience of being with oneself. Rather than portraying solitude simply as peaceful or isolating, these works explore its tenderness, humour, unease, contradictions and potential for personal growth. This ongoing personal practice allows me to develop new visual ideas while bringing a distinctive and thoughtful perspective to client briefs.
Three of my illustrations received Merit Awards in the 3×3 International Illustration Annual and were featured by 3×3 Magazine. Another illustration was licensed by Australian magazine frankie and published as an A3 pull-out poster.
I am available worldwide for editorial illustration, publishing, book covers, brand collaborations, commercial commissions and selected licensing opportunities.
